Biography

Paulo Machado was born in 1964 in Alcobaça, Portugal. He spent his childhood in a little farming village by the ocean. In 1982, he began studying philosophy and theology in Lisbon He continued his education in Italy, England, and then Kenya. It was here that a series of investigations into mythology and comparative cultural studies opened new perspectives to a deeper understanding of human pursuits.

Dissatisfied with the theological field, Paulo moved to the United States. Here he decided to focus his studies on visual expression. In 1994, he earned his BFA at the University of Maryland at College Park. Three years later, he completed his Masters of Fine Arts at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore.

Paolo taught visual arts at a Washington D.C. high school and lectured on art theory at the University of Maryland until 2002. He then moved to Ohio to teach full time as an associate professor at Mount Union College.

Today, aware of the importance of integrated education, he is dedicated to teaching visual expression as a channel of interdisciplinary thinking, focused on the needs of the times at hand. For him, there are thousands of different arts. One question guides his undertakings: Which art is necessary?

“I explore visual expression as a tool of inquiry and comment regarding the nature of human endeavors. The issues addressed, are therefore often connected to political, social, religious, mythological, philosophical, and environmental fields. The media used in these explorations are dictated by the ideas being addressed.”

Presently, Paulo lives in Pennsylvania, with his wife Beth and daughter Lilia.
