“Layer Upon Layer” consists of work by nationally recognized artists Mary Farmer, Jennifer J. L. Jones, Cara Enteles, and introduces Vancouver artist Stefany Hemming to her first American audience. All these artists explore the method of layering: creating depth and building rich color and texture in their work.
Using one of the most innovative methods of painting, Farmer melts beeswax and colored pigments into liquid/paste and then applies the hot mixture to a white panel. She labors through hours of sculpting and layering to build vibrant colors into masterful works of art. Jones expresses herself through multiple layers, which she says symbolize change, time and growth. Surface plays an important role in Enteles’ works; the layered stains and textures of aluminum affect the mood of each piece as light is dulled, absorbed or reflected. On the contrary, Hemming works within strict parameters and limits herself to one layer of paint, one color and a set amount of time.
The layered work entices viewers to search for subtle detail in its depths and the interactive nature is an ongoing experience for viewers.
